CORAL REEF RESEARCH MADAGASCAR

Expedition Summary

On this coral reef citizen science expedition in Madagascar, you will dive on the world's third-largest coral reef. We will be based in beachside cabins, and you will help marine biologists study and protect Madagascar’s coral reefs. You will be trained as a Reef Check EcoDiver, and with this qualification, you will help us collect important reef data. After this coral reef volunteer expedition, you can apply for PADI or NAUI Reef Check Specialty Course certification. You must be a fully qualified diver to participate in this expedition (minimum PADI Open Water or equivalent).

Team Size

A team of up to 10 members, along with your expedition scientist and leader.

Meeting Point

We will meet in the town of Toliara in southwest Madagascar. From there, we’ll travel to the expedition base in Mangily, a small beach community an hour north of Toliara.

Accommodation & Food

Participants will stay in basic beach bungalows, each shared between two individuals and equipped with a private bathroom. Single occupancy can be arranged for an extra fee. All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) are included and typically served at our accommodation. Drinking water is provided, while soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are available for an additional cost.

Weather

Southwest Madagascar is a dry region with very little rainfall except from January to March. The temperature is hot from October to May, with an average of around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). During the winter months, from June to September, the average temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). The water temperature varies from a low of 20 degrees Celsius (69 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter to a high of 31 degrees Celsius (89 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer.

Skills and Fitness

You must be a qualified diver (minimum PADI Open Water or equivalent) with reasonable fitness. Not yet a qualified diver? Consider arriving early to complete your Open Water Qualification with the dive shop in Mangily. Enquire for details.
